Who we are

Openfold for Students ("Openfold," "we," "us") is an independent iPhone and iPad app for students whose schools use Moodle. Openfold is not affiliated with or endorsed by Moodle Pty Ltd or by your school. This policy covers the Openfold app and the getopenfold.com website.

How Openfold works

When you sign in, you type in your school's Moodle address. From then on, Openfold talks only to that address, using the same mobile web service that Moodle's own app uses. Your courses, assignments, grades, messages and files travel between your device and your school's Moodle site. They never pass through us, and we have no way to see them.

Your school runs its Moodle site and decides what it records about your activity there, including activity that happens through Openfold. Your school's own privacy policy covers that.

Information stored on your device

Your sign-in

If you sign in with a username and password, the app sends them straight to your school's Moodle, which returns a sign-in token. Openfold keeps only that token and your school's address, in the iOS Keychain, set to stay on this device. Your password is never saved. If your school uses single sign-on, you sign in on your school's own login page inside the app, and Openfold receives the same kind of token.

Course data

So the app opens quickly and works offline, Openfold saves a copy of your course information on your device, including course lists, deadlines, grades, announcements, messages and files you choose to download.

Things you create in Openfold

Personal to-dos, private course notes, study plans, focus session history, course nicknames, colors and icons, and your settings are saved only on your device. They are not sent to your school or to us.

Widgets and Live Activities

To show your upcoming deadlines and focus timer on your Home Screen and Lock Screen, Openfold shares a small summary with its own widgets on your device. This stays on your device.

Removing your data

Signing out deletes your sign-in token and the saved copy of your course data. You can clear downloaded files and other saved data anytime in Openfold's settings. Deleting the app removes everything Openfold stored on your device.

Permissions Openfold may ask for

Openfold only asks for these when you use the feature that needs them, and you can change them anytime in the Settings app.

• Notifications, for deadline reminders and focus timer alerts you set up. These are scheduled on your device.
• Calendar, write-only, to add a due date to your calendar when you ask. Openfold can't read your calendar.
• Camera, to scan paper documents when you submit an assignment. Scans go only to your school's Moodle when you submit.
• Photos, through Apple's photo picker, so you can attach images to a submission. Openfold sees only the photos you pick.
• Face ID, if you turn on the app lock. Apple handles Face ID, and Openfold never receives your face data.

What we collect

Nothing. Openfold doesn't include analytics, advertising or tracking tools, and it doesn't send information about you or how you use the app to us or to anyone else. We don't sell or share personal information.

Content inside your courses can include links or embedded media from other services, such as a video your instructor added. When you open that content, it loads from that service, which has its own privacy practices.

The beta and TestFlight

The beta is distributed through Apple's TestFlight. Apple may share crash reports, basic device information and any feedback or screenshots you choose to send with us, as described in Apple's TestFlight terms and privacy policy. We use this only to fix problems and improve Openfold. If you email us, we'll use your email address and message only to reply.

The getopenfold.com website

This website doesn't use cookies, analytics or tracking. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which means your browser requests them from Google's servers. Our web host may keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses and pages requested, to keep the site running.

Children

Openfold is made for students using their school's Moodle. Because Openfold doesn't collect personal information, we don't collect any from children. A student's school controls its Moodle site and the data in it.

Changes to this policy

If we change how Openfold handles information, we'll update this page and the effective date above. If a change is significant, we'll also mention it in the app's release notes.
